Korea has moved to the top of the grand slams leaderboard in World Baseball Classic (WBC) history. Moon Bo-gyeong launched a first-inning slam against Czechia en route to an 11-4 victory in Pool C action at Tokyo Dome on Thursday. It was Korea's fourth grand slam, more than any other country in the history of the tournament, which started in 2006 and is now in its sixth iteration. According to the tournament organizers, Korea had been tied with the United States and Cuba with three apiece before Moon's blast. Lee Jin-young, currently the national team's hitting coach, had a grand slam against Chinese Taipei as part of a 9-0 victory in the first round in 2009. Then in 2023, Kim Ha-seong and Park Kun-woo each hit a grand slam in a 22-2 rout of China in the opening round. Moon's homer was one of four home runs by Korea in the game — with Shay Whitcomb smacking two and Jahmai Jones adding one. That's the most ever by Korea in a WBC game.
