Defence sources confirmed on Friday that Patriot launchers and interceptor missiles, consolidated from other US military facilities throughout South Korea, have been identified at the air base in Pyeongtaek City, approximately 60 kilometres south of Seoul. This movement aligns with rare sightings of large C-5 and C-17 military transport aircraft at Osan, further fuelling rumours of a forthcoming long-range deployment. This strategic adjustment comes as speculation mounts that the US Forces Korea (USFK) might send a portion of its military assets to the Middle East amid the escalating tensions between the US and Iran. History provides context for such actions: Washington deployed two Patriot batteries from South Korea to the Middle East last June during operations targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, which were subsequently returned to the peninsula in October. Adding complexity to the situation, this relocation coincides with preparations for the annual Freedom Shield exercise, a significant joint military drill scheduled from March 9 to 19. Officials have not dismissed the possibility that these movements are simply related to exercise preparations rather than indicative of an impending overseas deployment.
