"Sri Lankan opposition leader Sajith Premadasa accused the government of withholding key details about a reported torpedo attack on an Iranian naval ship near the country's waters, speaking in parliament in Colombo on Thursday. "The government has not yet made an official statement regarding whether the location of this attack is connected to our territorial waters or our Exclusive Economic Zone, nor have they outlined the diplomatic and security measures the state has taken. I must clarify, especially regarding international law, the UNCLOS convention," Premadasa said. "This current government does not know what is happening in our own territorial waters and our Exclusive Economic Zone. This government is unaware, and they are keeping both this House and the people of the country in the dark," he added. The Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was sunk on Wednesday by a US submarine in international waters roughly 40 nautical miles off Sri Lanka's southern coast, according to US defence officials. Sri Lanka's navy launched a rescue operation after receiving a distress call, recovering dozens of bodies and rescuing 32 sailors from the water, while others remain missing. The vessel had about 180 crew members on board and was returning from a multinational naval exercise in India when it was struck. Iranian authorities condemned the attack and warned Washington it would 'bitterly regret' it, as tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran continue to escalate across the region. It comes after the US and Israel launched joint military operations against Iran on Saturday, with President Donald Trump vowing to 'raze their missile industry to the ground'. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was later confirmed dead by both sides. Tehran said it was responding with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf region."
