LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) on Friday discarded 17,606 kilograms of expired mushrooms worth millions of rupees, along with 100 liters of fake milk and prohibited China salt and spices during raids conducted in Faisal Town, Johar Town and adjoining areas. The teams also sealed four food units and registered two FIRs while imposing fines over serious violations of food safety laws. The food safety team took action after recovering a huge quantity of expired mushrooms hidden in a warehouse located in Faisal Town. The DG said the expiry dates on the mushroom packaging had been erased and the product was intended to be supplied to various food outlets. A case was registered against those involved in forgery and for failing to present the supply record. The Director General said the teams also recovered fake milk from a dairy shop, which was immediately discarded and an FIR was lodged. Laboratory analysis confirmed that the milk samples had failed due to the presence of vegetable fat. Another food unit was sealed due to poor hygiene arrangements and failure to comply with previous instructions. He said further inspections revealed the use of prohibited ingredients in the preparation of biryani and other food items, upon which a restaurant was fined. Muhammad Asim Javaid stated that public health protection is being ensured on the instructions of the Chief Secretary Punjab. He further stated that raids against the fraud mafia are continuing across Punjab and those involved in food adulteration will find no place to hide. He emphasized that a strict food safety regime is being enforced in Punjab and businesses engaged in fraudulent practices are being shut down. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
