Sirens and interceptions - Israeli air defences respond to reported Iranian strikes over south

"Air defences were activated over southern Israel early on Saturday, as the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported projectiles incoming from Iran. Footage shows strikes being intercepted in the sky, leaving streaks of smoke trails as sirens blare across the area. Sirens sounded across southern Israel and Jerusalem at approximately 5:25 local time as the IDF confirmed it detected missiles launched from Iran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) had announced the start of the '22nd wave' of strikes against Israel and US assets as part of 'Operation True Promise 4.' According to preliminary reports, the strikes have been successfully intercepted by air defence systems, with no immediate reports of direct impacts or casualties. Tensions escalated in the Middle East after the United States and Israel launched joint military operations against Iran on February 28, with President Donald Trump vowing to "raze their missile industry to the ground". Tehran said it was responding with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf region. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was confirmed dead in a strike on Saturday. The escalations follow three recent rounds of nuclear talks between Iranian and American officials, one held in Muscat and two in Geneva."
