Service with a smile: Filipino workers help make cruising memorable

SINGAPORE — When the Adventure, Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, opens its doors to tourists for the first time on March 10, 2026, hundreds of Filipinos will be among the more than 2,000 personnel who will ensure that their stay on board will be pleasant and memorable. The Adventure, Disney’s biggest cruise ship, has Singapore as its home port. It is the first DCL ship to target the Asian market. The 16-story vessel, which can be considered a floating theme park, can carry over 6,000 guests. One of the Filipino employees interviewed by The Manila Times considers herself lucky to be working on the cruise ship. Although work hours can be long, she said the crew, a mix of various nationalities, cruises along well, reporting to their posts with cheer, always gracious and ready to assist guests. Filipino personnel abound on the Adventure. In the restaurants, pools, shops, recreation rooms or staterooms, one can bump into them at every turn. One employee who hails from Northern Luzon said that he believed Filipinos’ innate sense of hospitality and service with a smile, in addition to their mastery of the English language, make them the preferred crew for the cruise industry. He said they worked long hours but Disney compensates well. No figure was given on how many Filipinos have been hired by DCL to work on the Adventure, but by the looks of it, seems like a majority. And if you’re a Filipino cruising for the first time, that makes all the difference. Seeing a compatriot who is willing to go the distance can make one’s vacation truly more fun and memorable.
