'I leave with my head held high and hands clean' - Thousands bid farewell to Chile’s Boric ahead of handover to Kast

"Thousands of people gathered in Plaza de la Constitucion to bid farewell to Chilean President Gabriel Boric, ahead of the transfer of power on March 11, when Jose Antonio Kast will receive the presidential sash. Footage recorded on Saturday in Santiago shows supporters holding Chilean flags and photographs of Gabriel Boric, who delivered a speech in which he said he acted with integrity during his mandate. "I can say calmly and with conviction that I leave with my head held high and my hands clean," he declared. "I am a young president and I assumed with humility the mandate you gave me four years ago. I promise, from the bottom of my heart, that I have given my best to live up to this responsibility," he added. During his speech, Boric stressed his defence of democracy and human rights, as well as his commitment to social equality. "No to pardons, no to impunity," he noted. He also highlighted the importance of respecting the decisions of the Chilean people in order to "build a more just, more equal country, and one that has the principles of equality, fraternity, human rights, and democracy." Boric addressed international issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. "I see flags of Palestine, whose right to exist and to end the genocide we have defended firmly, with conviction, from the government. No to war," he asserted. Some supporters praised Boric’s governance during his 2022–2026 mandate and his dedication to the Chilean people. "I think there was not enough time because the country would have continued advancing," said attendee Nora Altamirano. The event reflected the support Boric still enjoys and marked a close to his four-year term, ahead of Jose Antonio Kast’s inauguration on March 11."
