'Cyprus turned into a launchpad for terror' - Protesters accuse UK of endangering their island, demand removal of British bases

"Cypriots took to the streets of Nicosia on Saturday to call for an end to the US and Israeli attacks on Iran and demand that British military bases be removed from their country. Footage shows demonstrators chanting as they marched through the city with signs and banners reading, 'women of Cyprus against imperialism' and 'bases out of Cyprus.' Protesters accuse the United Kingdom of endangering their communities by allegedly allowing the United States and Israel to use the Akrotiri and Dhekelia bases to launch attacks on Iran amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East. "If these bases were not involved in the US-Israeli military campaign across the region, there would have been no fear of an attack in the first place. The threat exists because Cyprus has been turned into a launchpad for terror," said one protester. "Make no mistake, the danger does not come from Iran," he asserted. "It is the legacy of decades of US and UK military operations in the region, launched from the island, and our governments deepening alignment with both the US and Israel." Security concerns in Cyprus have been heightened after a drone attack targeted the RAF Akrotiri base on February 28, prompting European allies to strengthen air defences on the island, which hosts several foreign military bases used for operations in the region. The drone attack prompted a partial evacuation of the military facility. Two more drones were intercepted on Monday, believed to have been launched by the Hezbollah group in Lebanon. In response to the strike and the continued threat of ballistic missiles, two Greek frigates arrived in Cyprus on Wednesday, with British and French naval units also expected to contribute to maritime patrols and counter-drone monitoring off the island. This came after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes targeting Israel and US assets across the region, with explosions reported in several countries across the Gulf. The escalation followed several rounds of talks between American and Iranian officials aimed at addressing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme - Tehran has always insisted on its peaceful nature. While Cypriot officials say the island is not directly involved in the conflict, its strategic location has heightened concerns about possible escalation."
