Dignified farewell - Salvadoran funeral home offers coffins for dogs, cats in Ahuachapan

"In the San Juan de Dios neighbourhood of Ahuachapan, a funeral home has initiated a programme to provide a dignified final farewell to pets, offering decorated coffins for dogs and cats. Footage filmed on Saturday shows the different models of dog coffins that can be found at the funeral home 'La Asuncion'. Funeral home owner Darwin Salazar shared that the idea came from a personal experience he had as a child when he lost his dog named Dogui. "I believe it would have been less tragic, less painful, to be able to do something dignified for him, a dignified burial," he remarked. It was from that experience of grief that he sought a service that would allow other people to say goodbye to their pets in a dignified and respectful way. "[The initiative] has been taken with a lot of affection, with a lot of love, people have accepted it and seen it as a good option to give their pet a final goodbye," he said. Funeral home worker Jennifer Arriaza said that people have been surprised when they realise there are coffins for their pets, as they often consider them part of the family. "[The purpose] is to make a true tribute, worthy for that pet or loved one, since for many a pet is part of the home, part of the family," she said. Families often look for ways to personalise the farewell by including meaningful items such as collars, toys, or special keepsakes. For many owners, this type of farewell represents a way to honour the affection and loyalty of their pets, who for years were an important part of their home."
