Kanlaon eruption triggers forest fires; ashfall hits 11 LGUs

BACOLOD CITY—Forest fires broke out on the slopes of Kanlaon Volcano following a moderately explosive eruption at 6:07 p.m. on Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. Ashfall and in some areas a strong sulfuric odor affected 54 barangays across 10 local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental: Binalbagan, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, Hinigaran, Isabela, San Carlos, Himamaylan, Kabankalan, Pontevedra, and Ilog.
