Mayon volcano activity intensifies with 539 quakes in 24 hours

LEGAZPI CITY — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Monday recorded the highest number of volcanic earthquakes since the latest unrest of Mayon Volcano began on Jan. 6, prompting authorities to maintain Alert Level 3 over the volcano. In its latest bulletin, Phivolcs reported 539 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours, accompanied by episodic minor Strombolian activity and short-lived lava fountaining. The monitoring period also logged 290 rockfall events and seven pyroclastic density current signals, indicating continued activity at the volcano.
