'Zelensky wants to punish us for having peaceful stances!' - Fico on Druzhba pipeline row, defends Hungary's 90 bln euro loan block to Ukraine

"Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico claimed that Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky will 'never let the oil through' amid the countries' ongoing row over the Druzhba pipeline. "In the energy war we are waging, we must sometimes make decisions and take steps that are atypical and tough. I think it was right that we adopted the first reciprocal measure when the oil was stopped, and that is stopping emergency electricity supplies. And we must ask ourselves what we are going to do next," he said. "We can all bend over backwards here. Our duty is to create pressure, so we will create it, but from the conversation I had with him, which was very strange. It is evident that he has absolutely no interest in oil reaching the territory of Slovakia and Hungary. It looks as though he wants to punish us for having peaceful stances," he continued. Hungary and Slovakia accused Ukraine of deliberately halting oil supplies through the Druzhba oil pipeline for political reasons, after flows were stopped in January. Kiev insisted the shutdown was caused by damage from a 'Russian attack'. Fico also stressed that Slovakia must 'take up the baton' if Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban loses the election. "It will probably be us who will block certain things, because we are not the servants of Ukraine," he added. This comes after Hungary has halted diesel supplies to Ukraine and blocked the 20th package of EU sanctions on Russia and said it would halt the bloc's latest €90 billion loan to Ukraine unless the oil supply through the pipeline continues. The Druzhba pipeline has long been a key route for Russian oil deliveries to parts of Central Europe."
