'Our home is part of European community' - Opposition leader Magyar holds rival rally amid claims 'Ukrainian gold and cash' funding campaign

"Opposition Tisza party leader Peter Magyar held a rally in Budapest on Sunday as Hungary marked its national day, commemorating the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 - amid claims from the government that Ukraine was funding his campaign with millions in cash and gold. Footage shows thousands of supporters gathering at Heroes’ Square, where Magyar addressed crowds during the annual event. "On the early spring morning of March 1848, it was raining in nearly the whole country," Magyar said. "My fellow citizens! Millions of our ancestors gave their blood, fought and have fallen for the free, European Hungary!" he continued, adding, "Let’s say it again so that the terrified emperor stuck in the past can hear: our country is part of the West, our home is part of the European community, and our country is part of NATO." The rally comes less than a month before Hungary's April 12 parliamentary election, with Magyar’s Tisza Party polling about 10 points ahead. The event featured performances of national anthems and folk songs, including 'Nemzeti Dal' by Sandor Petofi, a poem widely credited with helping ignite the 1848 revolution. Meanwhile, thousands of supporters of Prime Minister Orban gathered near Hungary’s parliament at Kossuth Square after marching from the Buda side of the capital across the Danube River - with that event believed to be the largest such one in history. Last month, the Budapest government reported there was now hard 'evidence' from intelligence agencies that Ukraine was funding the opposition Tisza party. It followed the detention of seven Ukrainians as they transported millions in cash and gold into Hungary from Austria. According to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, ‘$900 million and €420 million in cash, as well as 146 kilograms of gold’ were transferred in total since January 2026. Kiev called it 'hostage-taking' and 'stealing money', with the Ukrainian firm Oschadbank saying the latest seizure amounted to 35 million euros and 9kg of gold. Magyar has called it a smear campaign against his party."
