Plumes from the peak - Mount Kanlaon sends 5km ash cloud over central Philippines in third eruption of 2026

"Mount Kanlaon erupted on Sunday evening, sending a 5-kilometre ash column into the sky over the central Philippines, marking its third eruption this year, according to the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs). Footage shows a massive column of black ash rising from the summit crater. PHIVOLCS said the 'moderately explosive' eruption began at about 18:00 local time, with the plume drifting to the south-east and north-east. The main blast was followed by two ash emission episodes that lasted up to four hours, according to the institute. Ashfall was reported in 54 barangays across 11 local government areas, while classes were suspended in several towns in Negros Occidental. Authorities also urged residents to wear masks. Kanlaon is one of the Philippines' most active volcanoes, and the current episode was its third moderately explosive eruption in 2026."
