A large police presence has descended upon central Auckland, with witnesses claiming at least 15 police cars were chasing a vehicle. A witness told the Herald cars were spotted with lights and sirens speeding north, past Sylvia Park, just before 4pm. The Herald understands the cars headed towards downtown Auckland. A reporter on the scene in central Auckland said a chopper was hovering above the Victoria Park area. A witness said there was a figure “protruding” out of a vehicle. Police have also been seen around the Auckland University of Technology and outside a car dealership on Karangahape Rd. Earlier, a Herald photographer said it appeared a police officer was laying spikes at the entrance to the top of Hobson St at the entrances to the Southern and Northwestern Motorways. Police have been approached for comment.
