Dubai discourse - UAE President and King of Jordan reconfirm solidarity in face of growing regional escalation

"President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, welcomed King Abdullah II of Jordan to Dubai on Monday to discuss ongoing escalations and their implications for security and stability in the region. Footage released on Monday showed the Jordanian monarch being received by the Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, at Al Maktoum International Airport. Later, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and King Abdullah II could be seen sitting for the meeting, attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, who also serves as Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, along with several Emirati officials. According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the UAE President and King Abdullah II discussed the implications of the Iran war for regional security and stability, namely the ‘ongoing blatant Iranian attacks’ targeting neighbouring countries. Both leaders emphasised the need to halt military actions, prioritise dialogue and diplomatic solutions, and strengthen bilateral relations and joint cooperation between the two countries King Abdullah II reaffirmed 'Jordan’s solidarity with the UAE in defending its sovereignty and security', while the UAE President confirmed 'his country’s solidarity with Jordan in facing Iranian attacks'. The meeting comes in the wake of joint military operations launched by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets on 28 February. Iran responded by striking military sites in Israel and US interests across the region, with reports of explosions in several Gulf countries. Iranian authorities confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day of the conflict, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei selected as his successor. The Lebanese group Hezbollah later intervened in the conflict, saying its operations were ‘defensive’ and carried out in retaliation for Khamenei’s assassination, which it blamed on Israel. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz vowed to ‘destroy the party’s infrastructure, just as Hamas faced in Gaza’."
