'What happened in Gaza was going to spread' - Petro warns of global crisis, says Colombia is being pushed into 'conflict' with Ecuador

"Colombian President Gustavo Petro warned on Tuesday of a possible escalation in global tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East and growing regional frictions. Speaking during the signing of a presidential decree in Bogota, Petro said the violence in Gaza was likely to spread, describing it as an 'experiment' aimed at "frightening the people of the south" calling for global democracy. He also referred to past US military actions in the Caribbean, saying missiles struck not only the Middle East but also neighbouring Venezuela and Colombia. "What happened? Missiles even landed in Colombia. [...] And it was not an accident - Colombian fishermen were killed. The conflict is spreading, and now it seems there are efforts to stir up tensions between Ecuador and Colombia. That will get us nowhere," he said. His comments come after he accused Ecuador on Monday of a possible cross-border bomb attack that he said killed 27 people. Petro questioned how the device 'got there' and suggested it may have been dropped from an aircraft. Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa denied the accusation, insisting military operations are carried out only within Ecuadorian territory. Petro also warned that a wider conflict could lead to the deaths of thousands of civilians "who have nothing to do with geopolitics, but fall under the missiles." "Why did those girls have to die? What did they have to do with the geopolitics of oil?" he asked, referring to a recent strike on a girls' school in Iran. He said global powers were driven by the need to control oil reserves, arguing that some still believe a nation's strength depends on energy resources. "Their legitimacy comes down to nothing more than the number of missiles they possess. Set against the power of missiles and money are words and the masses," he concluded. A joint US-Israeli operation against Iranian targets started on February 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone strikes on Israel and US military positions in the region, while explosions were reported across Gulf countries.  Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was confirmed dead on the first day, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei selected as successor. US President Donald Trump warned that any new leader would 'not stay for long' if elected without US consent."
