Holon under fire - Shrapnel strike sparks vehicle fire as Iran hits central Israel in response to Larijani killing

"A fire broke out in Holon early Wednesday after shrapnel struck a vehicle, as Iran launched ballistic missile strikes on central and southern Israel following the killing of its national security chief, Ali Larijani. Footage released by Magen David Adom (MDA) shows flames engulfing a vehicle in a residential neighbourhood as first responders arrived on the scene. During the overnight attacks, missile fragments reportedly struck multiple locations in Ramat Gan, killing at least two and injuring several others. Emergency services reported that a man and a woman in their 70s were found dead in an apartment, likely unable to reach a protected space in time. Four others sustained light injuries in the strike, which officials said involved missiles carrying submunitions. The barrage follows the announcement that Ali Larijani, Iran's national security chief, was killed in an earlier Israeli strike. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that the missiles targeting central and southern Israel were launched "in revenge for the blood of martyr Dr Ali Larijani and his companions." Tensions flared in the Middle East after the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, amid talks over Iran's nuclear and missile programs. Tehran announced retaliatory strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in a number of Gulf countries. Iran also confirmed that its Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed on the first day of the conflict. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been selected as his successor. The escalating conflict has sent global energy prices soaring and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that carries around 20 percent of global oil shipments."
