Death from above - Israel releases video of Tehran strike targeting 'Basij operatives'

"The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released surveillance video on Tuesday, which it said shows a drone strike targeting Basij operatives at a checkpoint in Tehran. Footage shows an explosion on a busy road, followed by thick smoke and flames. According to the IDF, more than 10 Basij positions were struck, including an 'emergency command centre' operating from a former football club. Israel said the strikes are part of a far-reaching campaign targeting the Basij and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), adding that hundreds of alleged command centres have already been dismantled. "In addition to serving as part of the regime’s armed apparatus, Basij forces have for years been responsible for carrying out terrorist activity and leading violent repression against civilians during internal protests," the IDF said in a statement. In a separate announcement, Israeli authorities said Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij, was killed in an airstrike on Tuesday, March 17. The military said Soleimani was struck while meeting senior commanders inside a temporary 'combat tent' near Tehran, reportedly used after permanent headquarters were damaged in earlier strikes. Israeli officials also said the strike was part of the same operation in which senior Iranian official Ali Larijani was killed. The developments come amid a widening regional conflict following joint military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran, with Tehran retaliating against Israeli territory and US assets across the region. According to the latest figures, Iranian authorities report more than 1,400 deaths, while the United States says 13 of its service members have been killed."
