Million-dollar day in court - Rwanda SUES UK after Britain rips up 'batsh*t' asylum deal

"Britain and Rwanda clash at an international court on Wednesday in the Hague as Kigali seeks more than 100 million pounds (about $133 million) it says London owes under an agreement under which immigrants would have been relocated from the UK to Rwanda. The agreement caused a fuorore over human rights concerns and costs, famously being referred to as 'b*tshit' by a leaked government memo. Footage from the court on Wednesday showed legal teams and arbitrators arriving at the hearing. The case is being heard at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). Rwanda launched the proceedings in January over the Migration and Economic Development Partnership (MEDP), signed in 2024. The agreement aimed to relocate a number of migrants arriving irregularly in Britain to Rwanda for asylum processing. The plan was controversial and raised legal and human rights concerns and was later abandoned in 2024 after a change of government in Downing Street. Rwanda argues that the UK failed to honour financial commitments agreed through a binding exchange of diplomatic notes in June 2024. The deal included two payments of 50 million pounds each, due in April 2025 and April 2026, which have not been made. The case, scheduled to run from March 18 to March 20, could set a precedent for how countries handle financial obligations after withdrawing from international agreements. A ruling is expected at a later date."
