"Authorities in Colombia have dismantled an alleged international dogfighting network following a raid on a ranch in La Calera, near Bogota, the Attorney General's Office of Colombia said on Wednesday. At least 12 dogs were rescued and 13 people detained, including foreign nationals from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Ecuador. The operation, carried out with support from the National Police and animal protection units such as the Special Group for the Fight Against Animal Abuse (GELMA), resulted in suspects being caught in flagrante during an active fight inside a wooden ring. According to investigators, the site hosted organised fights involving Pit Bull dogs, allegedly linked to an international network coordinating illegal betting through digital platforms, with wagers exceeding $1,000. Authorities also discovered two dead dogs at the scene. Among those detained are four Colombian nationals, including the alleged organiser, Juan Esteban Leon Ramirez, and a veterinarian, Carlos Cifuentes Hernandez. Prosecutors have requested pretrial detention for both. The remaining suspects remain under investigation for offences related to animal death and injuries to animal health or physical integrity, which are considered aggravated crimes under Colombian law."
