Electronic tags for prisoners sentenced to up to 18 months as Belgian government tackles prison overcrowding

As part of efforts to tackle prison overcrowding, Belgian prisoners sentenced to up to 18 months’ imprisonment will be eligible for electronic tagging, the office of Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden (Flemish Christian democrat CD&V) has announced. In addition, prisoners sentenced to up to 10 years will be able to be released one and a half years early if they wear an ankle tag. The measure still needs to be discussed and approved by the inner cabinet and that will happen tomorrow.
