Playing with fire - Smoke rises over Riyadh after refinery missile attack

"Video footage circulating on Wednesday evening shows large fires and thick smoke rising over Riyadh following a reported missile attack. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence said its air defences intercepted and destroyed four ballistic missiles launched towards the city, adding that debris from one intercepted projectile fell near a refinery in southern Riyadh. Earlier, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said it would target 'fuel, energy, and gas infrastructure' across the region, in response to joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran’s South Pars gas field. The developments come amid escalating tensions after February 28, when Washington and Tel Aviv launched coordinated military operations against Iran, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear and missile programmes. Tehran has since carried out retaliatory strikes targeting Israeli territory and US military positions across the region, with explosions reported in several Gulf countries. During the escalation, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed and later succeeded by his son Mojtaba Khamenei. The conflict has since widened to include Hezbollah in Lebanon, which said it joined the fighting in retaliation for Khamenei’s death. Regional shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have also been disrupted, raising global concerns over energy supplies. The escalation has pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel, adding pressure to global markets and sparking protests in several countries."
