Karachi storm death toll climbs to 21 as hurricane-force winds level structures, cause widespread power outages

"At least 21 people have been killed by flooding in Karachi, southern Pakistan, as severe weather swept through the city, triggering widespread power outages and causing extensive disruption. Footage from Thursday shows floodwaters inundating major streets, along with a collapsed wall in Pakistan’s largest city after strong winds and heavy rain brought it down, killing several people. “Some of the victims were passersby, while others were waiting for the rain to stop before heading home,” said local resident Munir Khan. “When the wall collapsed, they could not get a way to get out,” he added. Rescue services later confirmed that the death toll from flood-related incidents had risen to 21. The storm also caused power outages in multiple areas, compounding the challenges faced by residents and emergency responders. Strong winds uprooted trees and scattered debris, forcing the closure of several major roads. The storm began on Wednesday and continued into the early hours of Thursday. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, wind speeds reached up to 90 kilometres per hour and persisted for several hours. Authorities said that other parts of the country were also affected by heavy rain, flooding and strong winds, as severe weather continues to impact the region."
