'We want change!' - Republic of Congo youth calls for better employment opportunities as Sassou Nguesso wins fifth term in office

"Youth from the Republic of Congo called for better employment opportunities after President Denis Sassou Nguesso secured a fifth term in office with a landslide victory. Footage captured on Thursday shows people walking on the streets in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, as well as a banner featuring Sassou Ngeusoo. "Progress or achievement is what every citizen expects. It's a change in the job market," voter Jean-Memene Loufou said. "We want this change. We want there to be enough companies in the country so that young people don't turn to delinquency," he added. Destin Ngoma, another local, echoed similar sentiments, stressing the Congolese leader's promise to reduce the unemployment rate. "If it is a private individual who creates jobs, the number will be limited, while if it is the government, the number will be greater, and it will allow us to decrease the unemployment rate in our country," he continued. Almost 60 percent of people in the Republic of Congo are under 25, with nearly half the population living below the poverty line. Preliminary results on Sunday suggest Sassou Nguesso secured his fifth consecutive term, with 94.82 percent of the votes, and his nearest rival less than two percent. Sassou‑Nguesso, 82, has dominated Congolese politics for over 40 years. He first became president in 1979, returned to power in 1997, and a 2015 constitutional change removed age and term limits, allowing him to run again."
