'Twisted like a whirlpool' - Cargo train derailment in Central Mexico kills one, injures eight

"A Ferromex cargo train derailment involving at least 24 northbound cars in Rincon de Romos, Aguascalientes, left a 40-year-old Honduran migrant dead, with two survivors pulled from the wreckage late on Thursday. Footage shows repair crews using excavators to clear the tracks and get them back up and running. Parts of the derailed train cars are also visible behind a fence. Eyewitness Angel Torres saw the train coming from south to north before it twisted like a 'whirlpool', making a loud clamour of screeching metal, before derailing. "They found a dead person there, and there are still injured people," he said. Resident Elpidio Perez reported that heavy machinery was the first to arrive at the scene, set up by workers to rehabilitate the track. "We saw that they began to move the first wagons that were on one side, and that is what we have been observing,” Perez said. The train repair staff is working around the clock to rehabilitate and assemble the track so traffic can be restored to normal. "While the machinery works and clears the units, they clear the track sections so that later we can build a new track and repair what needs to be repaired, rails, sleepers, and again allow train traffic," said repair worker Luis Rene Vazquez. Authorities had reported two individuals missing, both of whom were later pulled from the wreckage alive, bringing the number of injured to 8. The train was transporting 10,900 tons of steel and mineral coal from San Francisco de los Romo to Torreon, Coahuila. Preliminary investigations suggest the derailment may have resulted from vandalism or the theft of rail fasteners."
