Motor racing speed contest at Waikouaiti Beach: the first car race start. — Otago Witness, 9.3.1926 A gorgeous day, a perfect vista of sea, sky, and hill, a magnificent speedway of Nature’s own construction, the smell of petrol and burnt castor oil, and above all the deep-throated growl of many high-powered cars joining in chorus with the vicious cackle of high-revving motor cycles — all these ingredients blended together helped to make the Otago Motor Club’s speed contests at Waikouaiti on Saturday the most successful function of its kind ever held in Otago, and one which should go far towards establishing the meeting as an annual, or even bi-annual fixture.
