Donald Trump during the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy presentation with the Navy Midshipmen football team in the East Room of the White House on March 20. Donald Trump has branded Nato members “cowards” for not helping America re-open the Strait of Hormuz. The US president described the military alliance as “a paper tiger” in his latest rant on Truth Social. His comments came nearly three weeks after America and Israel started bombing Iran and amid warnings that he is “losing control” of the conflict. The Iranian regime has effectively shut down the Strait – which carries around one-fifth of the world’s oil supply – by launching missile and drone attacks on ships trying to use it. That has led to a spike in oil prices and sparked fears of a global economic meltdown. Trump has previously called on countries – including the UK – to send warships to the region to deter the Iranian attacks, but they have all so far declined. The president said: “Without the U.S.A., NATO IS A PAPER TIGER! They didn’t want to join the fight to stop a Nuclear Powered Iran. Now that fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military maneuver that is the single reason for the high oil prices. So easy for them to do, with so little risk. COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!” Trump’s comments are at odds with his claim on Tuesday that “we don’t need any help” from Nato, which he said had abandoned the US “in its time of need”. In another Truth Social post two days ago, the president issued a bizarre threat to America’s “non-responsive” allies over their response to the war. He said: “I wonder what would happen if we ‘finished off’ what’s left of the Iranian Terror State, and let the Countries that use it, we don’t, be responsible for the so called ‘Strait?’ “That would get some of our non-responsive ‘Allies’ in gear, and fast!!!” Related...
