"President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum demanded a thorough investigation to clarify the death of Royer Perez Jimenez, a young Mexican who was in ICE custody in Florida, United States. The Mexican leader stated that a ‘much stronger diplomatic letter’ will be sent to help find out what happened during the incident, speaking during her morning press conference in Cancun on Friday. "The report is that the young man committed suicide. However, we want a thorough investigation. And also, it cannot be that this is happening," she said. She explained that Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente is studying the situation together with his undersecretary Roberto Velasco, who will also provide support to the young man's family. "It is regrettable. And by all means we will raise our protest," the Mexican president added. According to the ICE report, Royer Perez Jimenez, 19, was arrested on January 22 and accused of fraud, after which he was transferred to the Glades County Detention Centre. On March 16, a county officer found the Mexican unconscious in a dormitory. Paramedics determined that Perez had no vital signs. Although one hypothesis points to a possible suicide, the official cause of death remains under investigation."
