Leadership handover - Uruguay’s Orsi arrives for CELAC summit in Bogota to assume pro tempore presidency

"President of Uruguay Yamandu Orsi arrived in Bogota on Friday to take part in the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), at which her country assumes the organisation’s pro tempore presidency. Footage captured on Friday shows the Uruguayan president arriving at the Agora Convention Centre in Bogota, where he was received by Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Marquez. The handover of the CELAC pro tempore presidency will take place on Saturday at 14:40 local time (17:40 GMT), during the tenth summit of heads of state, followed by a speech by the Uruguayan leader. Uruguay will assume leadership of the bloc at a time when it also holds the presidency of the Brasilia Consensus and the Group of 77 and China, and is preparing to take over the presidency of Mercosur in the second half of the year. During the transfer, the adoption of the Bogota Declaration is expected, the Colombian government reported, "in which member states will recognise the progress made over the past year in terms of regional integration, cooperation, promotion of peace and the strengthening of multilateralism in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as defining the priorities that will guide the work of the mechanism in the coming period." The summit will be held Saturday, 21 March, to support the growing rapprochement between CELAC and Africa, with an emphasis on strengthening South-South cooperation in areas such as development, trade and climate change."
