"Angel Esteban Aguilar Morales, known as 'Lobo Menor,' arrived in Guayaquil after being detained in Mexico and returned to Ecuador, where he is accused of masterminding the murder of former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. 'Lobo Menor' arrived on Friday night under heavy security. Interior Minister John Reimberg said he would be transferred on Friday to the Encuentro prison. "He had, in fact, fled the country some time ago, but he was able to appear in public with a sheet of paper covering his face, and that was allowed. The National Police identified the irregularity, launched an investigation and confirmed that he had escaped," the minister reported at a press conference. He described Aguilar as a 'dangerous criminal' for the entire region because of his leadership role in Los Lobos, and warned that he might attempt another prison escape. "[He is] a criminal accused of murder, including the alleged intellectual authorship of the killing of Fernando Villavicencio. [...] He is the second-in-command of the criminal structure of Los Lobos. He is a dangerous criminal not only for this country, but for the entire region. He has now been captured and will today be transferred to Encuentro prison, where no one will allow him to leave," Reimberg stated. Angel Esteban Aguilar was arrested on Tuesday at Mexico City International Airport while travelling under the name Juan Carlos Montero. Mexican authorities said he intended to stay in the country using false Colombian documents. He is wanted in Ecuador on charges including homicide, drug trafficking, extortion and evading justice. After previously being detained, he secured early release in 2022, absconded from supervision and fled first to Colombia and later to Mexico. His arrest is seen as a major blow to Los Lobos and a step forward in the investigation into the murder of Fernando Villavicencio, who was killed in Quito in August 2023."
