"Thousands of Muslims convened at the al-Azhar Mosque's yard in Jakarta on Monday to hold Eid al-Fitr prayer, a festive holiday that marks the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan. Footage shows worshippers arriving at the Open Field of the mosque with carpets, before listening to prayers and praying together. The procession also welcomed presidential candidate Anies Baswedan and his wife, Fery Farhati Ganis. "We are returning to our fitrah as a nation. Even though we have had to witness our activists being doused with acid by rogue elements of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, concerns over freedom of speech, and a role for Indonesia in the international arena that is highly questioned, Eid al-Fitr is an opportunity for us to return to our fitrah," Baswedan remarked. Eid Al-Fitr occurs on the first day of the tenth month of Shawwal in the Islamic lunar calendar, beginning with the rise of the crescent moon and ending a month-long period of dawn-to-dusk fasting during Ramadan. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population of any country in the world, with around 242.7 million devotees living in the country's various islands as of 2026, according to reports."
