MANILA, Philippines - The leftist Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives has opposed the planned establishment of an arms facility in the Philippines under the United States-led Partnership for Indo-Pacific Industrial Resilience (PIPIR), calling it a form of “war industry integration for US strategic needs.” A report by Reuters said the partnership is considering the Philippines as a host for a facility that would “load, assemble, and package 30mm cannon rounds”—a type of ammunition widely used by military aircraft and ground vehicles. In a statement issued Saturday, the bloc—led by ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Rep. Sarah Jane Elago, and Kabataan Rep. Renee Louise Co—said the country must not be turned into a logistical extension of US “warmongering.” “Any move to host ammunition production lines for weapons used by aircraft and armored vehicles is direct material support for militarism and aggression, while also making our territory more exposed to retaliation, sabotage, accidents, and escalation,” they said. “Ginagawa tayong target. Ginagawa tayong bodega ng bala (We are being targeted and turned into a storage site for ammunition),” they added.
