"At least eight people were killed and thousands displaced after two powerful earthquakes struck off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, in the southern Philippines, toppling homes, triggering landslides, and forcing thousands to evacuate. Footage of the aftermath, filmed on Saturday, shows damaged roads, landslides, and collapsed houses, with residents standing helplessly. Many described panic and disbelief as the ground split beneath them. "I cried when I saw the massive damage, but I thank God because there are no casualties in my family," said a local, standing beside what was once his home. "It’s painful for me because I don’t have a husband to rebuild the property. And the most agonising part is that I loaned money to build this house. I pray to God to help us, and the government to give a rise," said another resident. Another local admitted that the quake had reduced his house to rubble, while the landslide had carried away all his belongings. "When we checked the house, it was gone. The foundation collapsed, and all our things were carried away by the landslide — but it’s good we’re all safe," he said. A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern Philippines, with its epicentre located near Mindanao island, approximately 123km from Davao City, on Friday morning. Authorities say the powerful 6.9-magnitude aftershock reignited tsunami fears only hours after the initial alert was lifted, adding to the devastation in the southern Philippines. Eight casualties were confirmed by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) at the time of publication, with further damage still being assessed. The twin tremors on Friday occurred just days after a deadly earthquake in the central Philippines killed at least 79 people and injured hundreds."
