Cross-border tensions - Taliban claims 58 Pakistani troops killed as clashes escalate

"Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed on Sunday that recent border clashes with Pakistan have killed more than 58 Pakistani soldiers, accusing Islamabad of launching what he called a 'plan of rumours' against Afghanistan, speaking at a press conference in Kabul. “Attacks have been carried out on Pakistani posts at all points along the Durand Line. According to our information, more than twenty of their posts have been brought under siege by the Mujahideen, and 58 of their soldiers have been killed, with around 30 injured,” Mujahid said. He acknowledged that nine Taliban fighters were killed and 18 others wounded in the fighting. Mujahid accused Pakistan of initiating 'propaganda at high levels' against Afghanistan. “It has now become necessary to expose their wicked actions, and the world must focus on this issue,” he added. According to Mujahid, the Taliban had halted hostilities in response to mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, but resumed fighting after what he described as renewed Pakistani attacks on Taliban security posts earlier in the day. In response, the Pakistani army said that more than 200 Taliban fighters had been 'neutralised' and 21 enemy positions captured, adding that '23 brave sons of Pakistan' had been killed. The clashes reportedly erupted on Saturday night after Taliban forces attacked Pakistani border posts, accusing Islamabad of violating Afghan sovereignty following a series of explosions in Kabul and southeastern Afghanistan last Thursday, claims Pakistan has denied."
