President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron shared another long, aggressive handshake while meeting at the signing of the Gaza peace agreement in Egypt. The two came together ahead of the “family photograph” of world leaders who had gathered in Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday to witness the breakthrough ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. Trump was pictured amiably shaking hands with presidents, prime ministers and other leaders in turn, before the room was apparently infused with testosterone when France’s head of state arrived. (Watch a video at the top of the story.) President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron shake hands in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. During the 27-second clasp, they started with a traditional handshake and near-embrace before both leaders appeared to try to yank the other as they engaged in an overhand grip. When Macron attempted to break away, Trump continued to hold firm. This appeared to force the French president to grab his counterpart’s forearm before they finally parted. The grip-and-grin was captured on Fox News, with host John Roberts describing the face-off as a “bro shake.” Viral raw footage of the handshake characterised it as an “arm wrestle.” The incident is just the latest in a long history of prolonged, white-knuckle handshakes between Trump and Macron that began in 2017 at their first in-person meeting and continued in February when they met to discuss a possible end to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Trump was in Egypt to discuss postwar plans for Gaza and the U.S.-proposed deal with other leaders. It came as Hamas released all 20 of the last living Israeli hostages on Monday as part of the historic settlement after two years of war that has devastated the Gaza Strip. Buses carrying dozens of freed Palestinian prisoners drove to the West Bank city of Ramallah and the Gaza Strip, the Hamas-run Prisoners Office said, as Israel has released more than 1,900 prisoners.
