"Twins poured into southwestern Nigeria's Igbo-Ora, the 'world's twin capital,' on Saturday to celebrate the town's annual Twin Festival - doubling the fun and festivities. Footage shows twins dancing, singing and drumming in matching traditional outfits. Some can also be seen participating in festive rituals believed to bring good fortune to twins. "Every household having twins is a blessing to Yoruba culture, it is a blessing to Yorubaland. In South West Nigeria, we have the highest number of multiple births, not only in Igbo-Ora alone, South West Nigeria, all the South West states," a twin explained. "Twins are very special beings in this world," another added. "In the sacred Ifa teachings, the story of twins comes before all others. Twins are truly special, even among other people and cultures, we stand out." Igbo-Ora, often referred to as the 'Twin Capital of the World', boasts an extraordinary twin birth rate. The town's twin birth rate is approximately 45 to 50 per 1,000 births, significantly surpassing the global average of about 12 per 1,000. The Twin Festival features traditional rituals believed to honour the spirits of twins. Offerings and symbolic sacrifices are made to seek blessings of peace, prosperity and fertility for families - practices rooted in the Yoruba spiritual tradition. The abundance of twins in Igbo-Ora is often celebrated as a blessing and a gift. While locals credit the phenomenon to diets rich in yams and okra, the remarkable phenomenon has also made the town a subject of interest and study, as researchers explore the factors contributing to its high twin rate."
