Heavy rains forced children to stay overnight in Zamboanga school

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – Schoolchildren in far-flung Pisompongan village spent the night in their classrooms as heavy rains that started at 3 p.m. Tuesday swelled the river they were supposed to cross, making it dangerous for them to go home. The village is about 20 km from Midsalip town, the center of Zamboanga del Sur. Gideon Goc-ong, principal of the Pisompongan Integrated School (PIS), said that teachers decided to keep about a hundred of their pupils from kindergarten to Grade 10 safe inside their school buildings as it was too dangerous for them to cross the river.
