'I came here to look for my son' - Gaza hospital receives remains of 45 Palestinians returned by Israel for identification

"The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delivered the remains of 45 Palestinians returned by Israel under the ceasefire deal with Hamas to Gaza on Tuesday, as relatives in search of their loved ones gathered at the site. “I came here to look for my son among the dead. I don’t know if he is alive or dead, but he has been missing since the start of the war,” Jaber Salah, the father of a missing person, said. Footage shows ICRC vehicles loaded with deceased Palestinians arriving to Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis where families and specialists stood ready to identify the victims.  “Today, we received 45 bodies from the International Committee of the Red Cross. May God have mercy on them all. The committee co-ordinated with the Ministry of Health to ensure that the bodies were received in a manner that respects the sanctity of the martyrs,” Mohammed Zaqout, Director General of Gaza hospitals, said.  Zaqout added that a specialised committee will examine and identify the bodies, some of which are clearly recognisable while others will require further investigation. “The ICRC promised us that we would receive the names of the 45 bodies,” he noted.  ICRC spokesperson Hisham Muhanna said the operation was carried out in a way that “respects human dignity and ensures the safety of all those involved in the process.” He added that ICRC teams have intensified their humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip, stressing that “this issue is of paramount importance and must be given as much time and effort as possible to facilitate and sustain it.” “My son has been missing since 7 October, and we still haven't heard anything. I reported his disappearance to the Red Cross, but I haven't heard anything from them. We asked the freed prisoners, but they said they knew nothing about him. He was not among those who returned on the buses. We don't know where he is, and we won't rest until we find out whether he is alive or dead," Mahhrous Abu Hayah, father of another missing Palestinian stated.  The first phase of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas came into force on Friday, covering a ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, as well as an Israeli withdrawal to the 'yellow line', a boundary limit within Gaza.  On Monday, the last 20 Israeli captives, as well as four bodies, were handed over in exchange for almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.   The truce forms part of US President Donald Trump's 20-point Gaza peace proposal, unveiled on September 29 alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."
