Dads, Stephen Graham Wants You To Do 1 Simple Thing – And It Could Mean Everything To Your Son

Stephen Graham (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello) Stephen Graham ’s hit Netflix series Adolescence sparked a global debate on toxic masculinity and shone a spotlight on the sometimes stilted relationships that can exist between fathers and sons. Now, the actor is imploring dads everywhere to pen a letter to their boys – and he wants to publish it. Stephen is working with psychology lecturer Orly Klein on a new project asking fathers to write a letter to their sons about what it means to be a man. These letters, including one written by the Emmy winner to his own son, will be included in a landmark book called Letters to Our Sons, to be published next October. The project is an attempt to keep the conversation going on masculinity and what it means to be a man nowadays – especially given a rise in misogynistic behaviour among some boys, fuelled by certain online groups . Stephen star said in a YouTube video that after the release of Adolescence, which was about a young teen boy arrested for the murder of a female classmate, he was “surprised” by the number of dads who approached him and told him about “the kinds of conversations they’d been having with their sons”. He said: “I realised there was a greater need for communication between fathers and sons. “There is arguably an even bigger disconnect than ever before, and I would love to help create more opportunity for fathers to reach out to their sons and carry on the conversation.” Stephen went on to say that he wants to hear from men of all ages – “first-time fathers, absent fathers, fathers who’ve been there but never truly been there, fathers who’ve lost and fathers who just want to find a way to say I love you, to tell their sons what they mean to them and to talk openly about what it means to be a man”. Orly said the powerful project was inspired by a gift to her son on his 13th birthday. “When my son turned 13, I asked a range of male friends to write him a letter that explained what they believed made a good man, and what advice they would like to give him,” she said. “Some letters were funny, some were sad, most of them were thoughtful. Stephen and I have a mutual friend, and when I told her about this, she put us in touch, because she knew there was an idea for a book there somewhere. “She knew that Stephen and I shared the same commitment to tackling the issues facing young men today.” Dads can share their submissions now at www.letterstooursons.co.uk. Last month, Adolescence took home Emmy awards in all six of the categories it was nominated in. This included acting wins for cast members Stephen Graham , Erin Doherty and Owen Cooper , the latter of whom is now the youngest male performer to ever win an Emmy , while the show itself scooped Best Limited Series Or Anthology Series, as well as being awarded for its writing and directing.
