BACOLOD CITY—Eighty-one volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano in just 10 hours, prompting a warning from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) of a possible steam-driven or moderately explosive eruption. The quakes, which occurred between midnight and 10 a.m. on Thursday, ranged from magnitude 0.1 to 2.9 and were detected at depths of 0 to 6 kilometers beneath the volcano’s northwestern slopes. Phivolcs said the sudden spike in seismic activity indicates intensifying rock fracturing caused by rising magma or magmatic gases. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) gas emissions from the summit crater also remained elevated, averaging 1,879 tonnes per […]... Keep on reading: 81 quakes rattle Kanlaon Volcano
