Phivolcs logs 81 earthquakes at Kanlaon Volcano in span of 10 hours

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 81 earthquakes at the Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in 10 hours on Thursday morning. The volcano-tectonic (VTs) earthquakes were recorded between 12 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Oct. 16 with magnitudes between 0.1 and 2.9. The tremors are as deep as six kilometers below the northwestern flank of the volcano. “VTs are generated by rock fracturing processes, and the increase in VT activity strongly indicates progressive rock-fracturing beneath the volcano as rising magma or magmatic gas drives a path towards the surface,” the state seismologist explained.
