MANILA, Philippines — What began as a romantic relationship ended three years after in an extortion case with the arrest of one of the partners, a 48-year-old Nigerian, in Las Piñas City. Authorities identified the suspect only as “Dennis,” who was nabbed around 6:20 p.m. on Thursday inside a fast-food restaurant during an entrapment operation conducted by the Southern Police District (SPD). According to police, the operation stemmed from a complaint filed by the Nigerian's partner, a businesswoman identified only as “Marie,” a Filipina, who accused Dennis of demanding ₱1 million under threat of exposing her personal information, which could ruin her business. Investigators said Marie and Dennis had been in a relationship for three years before the victim decided to end it. Police said that after the breakup Dennis began blackmailing Marie, prompting her to seek help from authorities. Recovered from the suspect were a genuine ₱1,000 bill used as marked money placed atop boodle cash, two brown envelopes, and two mobile phones. The suspect is now in the custody of the District Special Operations Unit (DSOU) for documentation and the filing of charges.
