MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte described the Office of the Vice President as a "pillar of Philippine democracy" that transformed challenges into opportunities for impactful, grassroots service as it celebrated its 90th anniversary Thursday. The OVP was created as part of the 1935 Constitution that created the Philippine Commonwealth, removed in the 1973 Constitution, and was reinstated in the 1987 Constitution. To date, there have been 15 Vice Presidents since Sergio Osmena Sr. was elected in 1935. In her message, Duterte said that every Vice President in the country went through different experiences and challenges, from recovering after a war to crises and revolutions, and every one, through personal dedication, expanded the mandate of the office. "Pinatunayan nila na ang tunay na kapangyarihan ay nakakamit sa pamamagitan ng serbisyo publiko (They proved that real power is achieved through public service)," Duterte said. She urged the public to visit the OVP's pop up exhibits across the country to witness the stories, documents, and artifacts that showed the former Vice President's contributions through the years. Duterte also said that the OVP's 90th year would also launch the office's foundational groundwork to ensure the office remains "strong, stable, and effective for the next century,". Its three goals for the future include the creation of an OVP Museum, a permanent office for the OVP, and its charter. "These initiatives are our commitment to democratic institution-building. Strengthening this office will allow us to serve you better, more efficiently, and with greater impact," Duterte said.
