Le dramaturge avait remporté quatre Tony Awards pour ses pièces "Rosencratz et Guildenstern sont morts" (1968), "Travesties" (1976), "The Real Thing" (1984) et "The Coast of Utopia" (2007) ainsi qu'un Oscar du meilleur scénario pour "Shakespeare in Love" (1998)
