"Protesters clashed with police in the Thessaly region on Sunday as farmers blocked the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway with tractors over delayed EU subsidies and government corruption. Footage shows police officers using tear gas against the protesters as they attempted to breach a police cordon. Demonstrators can be seen attempting to overturn a police vehicle while drone footage captures the massive line of tractors filling up the highway. The protesters hit the streets over fair production costs and a shortfall of payments of EU agricultural subsidies. The subsidies were delayed after a series of leaks revealed a long-standing corruption and mismanagement of EU agricultural funds, triggering widespread social discontent. This comes after Greek Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, revealed on September 2 that more than 15% of applications for EU funding had been fraudulent, with €23 million ($26.6 million) of funds having been issued to applicants illegally, following an investigation. In October, Greek Payment and Control Agency for Guidance and Guarantee Community Aids (OPEKEPE) Vice President Ioannis Kaimakamis resigned after admitting that family members had been awarded funds, with an ALCO poll in September revealing that 70 percent of Greeks believe the Mitsotakis government is corrupt and failing on transparency. The Greek government has promised that delayed subsidy payments will be cleared in 2025."
