'High hopes peace of peace between Russia, Ukraine soon' - Iranian, Turkish FMs hold bilateral talks in Tehran

"Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hosted his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Tehran on Sunday for talks on regional security, bilateral ties and ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding Ukraine and the Middle East. Footage shows the two ministers shaking hands before heading into extended discussions alongside their delegations. Speaking at a joint press conference, Araghchi said the meeting included 'very close and good' consultations on a range of issues, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions, US sanctions and recent developments at the UN Security Council. “Today, we had very close and good consultations, and we will continue on these consultations, on the Iranian nuclear issue and the unjust sanctions of the United States too," Araghchi said. We also had consultations regarding the Snapback and what happened in the Security Council. Necessary explanations were given, and we are confident that the cooperation between the two countries will have a growing trend,” he added. The Iranian minister also highlighted cooperation on regional security, saying Tehran, “while supporting the disarmament of the PKK and the realisation of a Turkey free of terrorism, emphasises the necessity of dissolving all terrorist groups to achieve a terror-free region.” For his part, Fidan reaffirmed Ankara’s continued engagement in efforts to broker peace between Moscow and Kiev. “We believe in the significance of peace between Ukraine and Russia for our region and ourselves. As you know, we, in Turkey, work relentlessly alongside all our institutions, particularly our president, to accomplish it. We have high hopes that peace between Russia and Ukraine will be achieved soon,” he said. Turkey has maintained a central role in mediation since the early stages of the war and has been pushing for the revival of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which allowed the safe export of Ukrainian grain until its collapse. The meeting comes as the United States circulates a new 28-point peace proposal for Ukraine. Washington and Kiev remain in talks over the plan, while Moscow has confirmed receiving the document through diplomatic channels. Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO. Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow."
