In 2022, the Pulp Fiction actor’s family – including Emma, his daughters and his first wife, Demi Moore – issued a joint statement announcing that he had aphasia, a condition that affects the ability to communicate. The following year, Bruce’s family disclosed that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia , described by the NHS as a rare form of dementia which can cause personality and behaviour changes, as well as problems with mental abilities and issues with memory and verbal communication. Since then, Bruce’s family has regularly kept the public updated with his progress . Last week, the family celebrated Thanksgiving, and in an interview with People conducted a week earlier , Emma spoke about how she approaches these celebrations in light of Bruce’s diagnosis. “Bruce loved Christmas, and we love celebrating it with him. It just looks different, so we’ve kind of adapted to that,” she said. She continued: “You have to learn and adapt and make new memories, bring in the same traditions that you had before.” She continued, “Life goes on. It just goes on. Dementia is hard, but there is still joy in it. “I think it’s important that we don’t paint such a negative picture around dementia. We are still laughing. There is still joy. It just looks different.” Emma also quipped : “I think it’s important to put Die Hard on because it’s a Christmas movie.” Over the summer, Emma shared that Bruce had recently moved out of the family home , and into accommodation where he could be professionally cared for around the clock. “It was one of the hardest decisions that I’ve had to make so far,” the British former model told US broadcaster Diane Sawyer. “But I knew first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.” Emma and Bruce share two daughters, 13-year-old Mabel and 11-year-old Evelyn. The screen legend also has three grown-up daughters, 37-year-old Rumer, 34-year-old Scout and 31-year-old Tallulah, from his first marriage.
