"Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto accused the European Union on Monday of losing all credibility in Central Europe, claiming the bloc’s 'fully ideologised' foreign policy has left it isolated and irrelevant on the world stage, speaking before the Hungarian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee in Budapest. “The European Union has been completely sidelined from the management and resolution of conflicts on the European continent,” he said. “Perhaps some European capitals still have the illusion that their permission is needed to move in Central Europe. But the reality today is that the European Union has ceased to be a dominant global political force.” He pointed to what he described as the EU’s failure to resolve crises in its immediate neighbourhood, from tensions between Serbia and Kosovo to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. “What led to this? Well, it was partly led by the fully ideologised foreign policy of Brussels,” Szijjárto argued. “Today, the European Union is implementing a pro-war, pro-migration and pro-gender political foreign policy strategy, and the European Union has completely isolated itself in global politics.” The minister also criticised what he called Europe’s 'by-choice isolation' from the United States under President Donald Trump, accusing EU leaders of posturing for media approval rather than safeguarding strategic relations. “Just as European politicians remember what they said about Donald Trump, so does Donald Trump remember what these European politicians said about him,” he said. “It is, however, a shame that in European-American relations, Europe is consistently on the losing side.” His comments come as peace negotiations over the Russia–Ukraine conflict continue, with reports suggesting European governments have been increasingly marginalised in discussions led by Washington. Trump’s initial 28-point proposal, which included territorial concessions by Ukraine and a commitment never to join NATO, drew strong objections from EU leaders. At the same time, divisions persist within the bloc over Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal to use frozen Russian assets to fund a long-term 'reparations loan' for Ukraine, a plan critics warn is legally risky and could undermine investor confidence. Moscow has called the proposal unlawful. US envoy Steve Witkoff is expected in Moscow this week, while Marco Rubio and Kiev's current chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, held talks in Florida over the weekend. Their meeting followed the resignation of Volodymyr Zelensky’s powerful chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, amid an ongoing corruption scandal."
