Phreatic, phreatomagmatic eruptions hit Taal Volcano

LUCENA CITY — Taal Volcano in Batangas province generated two short-lived eruptions — one phreatic and one phreatomagmatic — early Thursday, December 4, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. Phivolcs said the phreatic burst occurred at 12:58 a.m., followed by a phreatomagmatic explosion six minutes later. Both lasted about two minutes. The activity produced plumes rising approximately 1,200 meters before drifting southwest, as seen through the volcano’s IP surveillance camera.
